Storage and Handling

How should I store my EPIPEN Auto-Injector?

Your EPIPEN is light sensitive and should be stored in the carrier tube provided to protect it from light.

Store at 68° F to 77° F (20° C to 25° C); do not expose to extreme heat or cold.

Do not refrigerate.

What happens if the EPIPEN Auto-Injector is exposed to extreme temperatures?

If the device has been in extreme cold or heat, the EPIPEN should be replaced.

How do I check the expiration date and solution clarity?

Your EPIPEN has an expiration date. Replace the pack of auto-injectors before the expiration date.

The epinephrine solution in the clear window of the EPIPEN should be inspected visually for solid pieces and discoloration. Replace if the epinephrine solution is a pinkish or brown color, cloudy, or contains solid pieces.

What should I do with an expired or used EPIPEN?

Throw away an expired, unwanted, or unused EPIPEN in an FDA-cleared sharps disposal container right away after use. Do not throw away the auto-injector in your household trash. If you do not have an FDA-cleared sharps disposal container, you may use a household container that is:

  • Made of heavy-duty plastic,
  • Can be closed with a tight-fitting, puncture-resistant lid, without sharps being able to come out,
  • Upright and stable during use,
  • Leak-resistant, and
  • Properly labeled to warn of hazardous waste inside the container.

When your sharps disposal container is almost full, you will need to follow your community guidelines for the right way to dispose of your sharps disposal container. There may be state or local laws about how you should throw away used needles and syringes. For more information about safe sharps disposal, and for specific information about sharps disposal in the state that you live in, go to the FDA’s website at: http://www.fda.gov/safesharpsdisposal.

Visit the FDA’s website for more information about how to throw away unused, unwanted, or expired medicines.

After using your EPIPEN Auto-Injector in an allergic emergency, get emergency medical help right away and give your used auto-injector to a healthcare provider for disposal.
